Email

We have a free email service available to Yarwell residents, this is separate from your internet service provider (ISP) and by using this you can change ISP whenever it suits you without having to tell everyone a new address. Email addresses are in the form somethingorother@yarwell.com and you can choose what goes in front of the @ symbol - as long as nobody beat you to it. You might want to use firstname.lastname@yarwell.com or perhaps the name of your house, or business or just the family name.

If you want to set up a yarwell.com email address then please Email us stating your preferred email address and including a password that you can remember. We'll email you back confirming the details and explaining how to set up Outlook Express to use the new address. You can also use our versatile Webmail facilities to look at your email from any web browser - don't forget to log in with your full email address as the username.

Please note that all email is filtered through Spam Assassin for your protection, spam email is automatically discarded.

Our webmail is available in Standard or Secure versions. You have the choice of three different webmail applications which all do the same thing but slightly differently, so use the one you like best. You can also change your password, set up automatic replies ("away on holiday" etc) or arrange for copies of incoming emails to be sent to other addresses.
Outlook Express and other POP3 email software can receive the email from server mail.yarwell.com on port 110 (the standard or default port) with user name in the format user+yarwell.com - so email for test@yarwell.com would be collected by using test+yarwell.com as the user in Tools/Accounts/Properties in Outlook Express.

To send email the SMTP server should be set to the server provided by your ISP, for example mail.btinternet.com - it is a requirement of most ISPs that you send through their server to control spam or other abuse. If this causes you a problem or if you need a "use it anywhere" capability then Email us and we can arrange an alternative method.

Broadband

Yarwell and nearby villages has ADSL Broadband supplied via the telephone exchange in Wansford. Since April 2006 the service available includes "up to 8 Mbits/s" and some of Yarwell is close enough to get the full 8M speed - the nearer to Wansford the better !

BT Broadband Broadband Internet is a faster better way to access the internet over BT phone lines using a technology called ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line). After a succesful campaign it came to our area in July 2003. As we have a small exchange (2,000 lines) we don't have access to any of the "local loop unbundled" services like Talk Talk, Be*, UKOnline or Bulldog as these are only economic on big exchanges.

ADSL uses existing phone lines to provide high speed internet access. Monthly costs start around £14.99 per month with no per-minute or per-session charges or time limits. ADSL is a neat solution because it is always on - no delay for dialling your ISP. In most cases it is free of charges apart from the fixed monthly payment, so no big phone bill to worry about. You can also use your phone line for talking at the same time as ADSL is providing data to your computer - no more engaged tones and no need to pay £10/month for a second line. Some reasons to switch to ADSL are given here. A supplier with local support (living in Yarwell!) can be found at South Witham Broadband.

If you're confused by who supplies Broadband via ADSL in the UK, remember that BT Wholesale put the equipment into exchanges and rent it out to a range of competing retailers. One of these retailers is BT Retail with a range of services where you get billed for it on your phone bill. No wonder you're confused ! There is a whole alphabet of competing ISPs from Andrews & Arnold to Zen Internet - you are advised to research their offerrings and users experiences of them via the internet or specialist magazines.
